Hi, I’m That Bastard Kurtis, you may remember me from other account names such as Thunderbolt - Yes, We Have No Miatas and Thunderbolt - Land Cruisin’. Anyway whatever, I’ve had the toolboxes I had in my Land Cruiser floating around in the back of my Tahoe, so I did something about it.

Kinja'd!!!

This version is significantly simpler than what I had in the Land Cruiser because the wheel wells are higher than the tool boxes. In the Cruiser I built a box with sides between the wheel wells, this time I just cut a piece of plywood to sit on top of the wheel wells and a divider for the middle.

Because of that I don’t have as much vertical space as I did in the Land Cruiser, but that’s no big deal, I don’t put anything big in there.

And that was my 15 minute project that I should have done months ago.

Quick and easy! Nice! I’m working on some storage for the Cruiser too.

I have a Tahoe too and it still boggles my mind how little storage space there is in such a large vehicle.

But nicely done on the dividers. Are you planning to leave them bare? I only ask because if it were me I’d probably get a roll of cheap vinyl the same color as the interior and at least cover the top pannel.

Thanks. I always wanted something more like drawers in my Cruiser, but never wanted to spend the money...you’ve got the right idea in building your own, the commercially available options, while awesome, are soooooo expensive. If you’re planning to use it as a sleeping platform I certainly wouldn’t give that up, unless you got a roof tent, which would be awesome.

Is this a name change or a burner?

I probably would of went with a cargo net, but I guess it does hide things out of sight from prying eyes.

Name change, I’m awful at remembering burner passwords and didn’t want to go through the whole ‘beg somebody for authorship’ thing again.

The child seat prompts me to ask if the dividers are securely fastened, and ask if there is a way to securely fasten items on top of the divider.

In an accident, or emergency braking situation, those work bags on the shelf can become projectiles.

On a separate note, I like things that help in organizing space, and making it more useful, so kudos on that.

I just went with some Stayhold cargo blocks.

This isn’t my car, but it’s the same idea.

Planning on keeping the sleep inside option. Better to have and opt otherwise than to be up a creek.

Thinking about adding some tie-downs to yours? I’d hate for that stuff on top to become a projectile!

I’d make one suggestion: mount a 2x4 or 2x6 or even a 1x4 on edge across the front and along the sides of the top to keep things from sliding forward onto the kiddos in the backseat or into the side windows.

On second look: I’d go with 1 x 5 across the front and not worry so much about the sides. But I’d definitely want some sort of rail across the front.

I was actually thinking of netting or something at the back, just to keep whatever is back there back there in the case of an accident.

Before I actually drive with it in there, there will be a tie down system. I’m actually working on a netting to go behind the back seats, floor to ceiling, to keep everything in the back in the back. That picture is just mocked up.

I was going to carpet the whole thing in gray outdoor carpet, I think it’ll look nice and hold up well for what I’m doing.

I thought about that, but I like having those two toolboxes in there all the time (one has jumper cables, fire extinguisher, spare coolant, rags etc and the other has blankets, spare jackets, and bottled water) and still wanted a flat load surface. Groceries have been a real pain in the ass with the boxes back there.

I’m gonna go with netting between the rear cargo area and the middle seats, as well as tie downs for the permament stuff. I’ve got quite a lot more horizontal space to play with than I did with my Land Cruiser, so I should be able to come up with some good solutions.
